Mespilus Germanica Westerfield’ is a decorative medlar tree. The tree blooms from May to June with white flowers and in the autumn it sets characteristic brown fruits. The striking medlar fruits are particularly suitable for flower decoration and for processing into jam, marmalade and jelly. The medlar fruit is full of vitamin C and is good for the stomach and digestion. The fruits are small and golden brown in colour. It is best to pick the fruits after a night frost and store them with the top down in a cool place for two to three weeks. This storage is called ‘bletting’. The fruit turns sour and is only then edible. It likes a sunny spot and is very Hardy.
