Tuscan Jasmine (Trachelospernum)

Trachlospernum is also known as Star Jasmine or Tuscan Jasmine. This plant remains beautifully green in the winter and flowers profusely through almost the entire summer with fragrant, white or yellow, star shaped flowers. Its height of flowering is in May, but in a good summer the plant keeps flowering for an even longer period. You can sometimes smell the Tuscan Jasmine dozens of metres away. The Trachlospernum is originally from Asia, but also commonly grows in the Mediterranean region, including Italy. This is why it is often referred to as Tuscan Jasmine. It is truly a sun loving plant and it therefore prefers a sunny location against a South facing wall.
How do I care for my Trachlospernum?
The Tuscan Jasmine does not have many soil requirements. It grows well in most soil types, but a well-drained soil is important; a wet surface during cold periods causes susceptibility to frost damage. This Jasmine does not grow very vigorously in our climate, also making this fragrant climbing plant suitable for our smaller gardens. You can also plant it in large decorative pots. Pruning can be limited to a maintenance trim in March or after flowering in October when you can prune the Jasmine into its desired shape.
How many should I plant per metre of trellis fence or wall?
We recommend about 3 plants per trellis metre.

Does my Tuscan Star jasmine need trailing as it climbs?
Yes, this is best done by tying your Trachlospernum upwards along a trellis as it grows, or by regularly attaching it to your fence. Because this climber does not grow very fast, you will not need to do this on a weekly basis. In its natural setting, this Jasmin grows as a groundcover until it finds a tree along which it can climb upwards.
